The Killzone series is very rich, with opportunities for more games, according to Guerrilla Games managing director Hermen Hulst. He said in the October issue of Game Informer, which is out today, that the franchise reached a "conclusive" end with 2013's Shadow Fall, but the door hasn't been shut for more games in the future.

"Killzone is very key and very core to Guerrilla," he said. "We have a lot of love for the franchise. In a way it's conclusive, but at the same time we'll leave everything open for the future. Who am I to say we'll never do anything? There's too much in it to ever make any kind of definite statements on [the future of Killzone]."

Up until PlayStation 4 launch title Shadow Fall, Guerrilla Games and studio-owner Sony had released a new Killzone title almost every other year since the franchise first launched with the original Killzone in 2004. That game was followed up by Killzone Liberation in 2006, with Killzone 2 coming in 2009. Killzone 3 was released in 2011, while 2013 saw the release of the latest entries, Killzone: Mercenary and Killzone: Shadow Fall. Mercenary was made outside of Guerrilla proper, having been developed by Guerrilla Cambridge.

This isn't the first time Guerrilla has talked about the future of the Killzone franchise. A year ago this month, Hulst said it was "too early" to talk about what might come next for the Killzone series because the studio is heads-down working on Horizon: Zero Dawn.

"It's going to be a very big challenge for us to get [Horizon: Zero Dawn] out the door," he said at the time. "And as for what's going to happen after that? We'll talk about that later."

Horizon: Zero Dawn, an impressive-looking PS4 action-RPG, was originally scheduled to come out this year, but is now slated for February 2017. "The new date affords us the extra time required to deliver fully on our ambitious vision for Horizon: Zero Dawn," Hulst said when announcing the delay in June.

The October 2016 issue of Game Informer is available now for digital subscribers.
