Despite its massive budget and impressive overseas box office results, this year's big screen fantasy game adaptation Warcraft proved to be a critical and commercial disappointment. Now director Duncan Jones has spoken frankly about the film's reception and how he feels about it.

In an interview with Thrillist, Jones admitted that he had mixed feelings about the end result. "I'm equally proud and furious about Warcraft," he said. "I love it. I spent so much time on it. I put all my heart into trying to make it work. Parts of it, I think, work but it also drives me crazy that I wasn't able to push through everything that I knew needed to happen in order to make the film I knew it could be."

Jones went on to explain that the film's protracted three-year production process meant that the constant changes ultimately affected the final movie. "It's little changes that seem really innocuous," he said. "As a filmmaker the only way that I understand how to make a film is holistically. Every choice that I make, whether it is story or character or costume, all works together.

"When you make a little change it doesn't seem like a big deal. When you keep making those little changes, especially over three and a half years, suddenly you're basically spending all of your time trying to work out how to patch up what has been messed around with."

Nevertheless, the director revealed that there was much about the movie he was proud of, in particular the relationship between Durotan and Draka, the orc characters played by Toby Kebbell and Anna Galvin. "[It feels] like a real relationship between a husband and wife, and those two characters being orcs," he said. "That was something that I pitched right from the start, and fought hard for, and was able to keep that in there. That always felt like a real win."

While Warcraft was originally intended to be the first part of an ongoing series, the weak box office performance in the US has meant that a sequel is not guaranteed.

Nevertheless, Jones did admit that he would be open to returning for a second movie. "I would love to capitalize on three and a half years of hard work and be able to have some fun in that world now that I've done the hard work," he admitted. "Who knows? Maybe I'm just being a masochist."
